Mark was ordained in The United Methodist Church. As the UMC continued to drift for its theological and ethical moorings, he made a formal request to transfer his credential as an ordained minister to the EMC. This is what Mark specifically asked: "Pursuant to Paragraphs 361.1 and 361.4 of The Book of Discipline of The United Methodist Church, 2004, as an ordained member in good standing, 361.1, I surrender my ministerial office to unite with The Evangelical Methodist Church. 361.4." The credential he received from the EMC states the following: "This is to certify that Mark Rains holds the relation of ORDAINED ELDER in The Evangelical Methodist Church and is a member of the Atlantic District Conference."
